Committed Artists for Cultural Advancement (CAFCA) is a non-profit organisation (039-631NPO) formed by musicians around Pretoria under the leadership of Jesse Mogale. Aim of the project is to help children of disadvantaged families. CAFCA seeks to increase an awareness of music as an art form and as an alternative career that can be followed by black youth from the disadvantaged community and township of Mamelodi.
CAFCA recruits youths with no or very little music experience. Instruments and music lessons with skilled tutors are offered to them three times a week. We give preference to learners aged 7 – 22 years primarily resident in our township. Most of these students’ parents are not able to afford regular payment requirements. Committed musicians volunteer their time to teach these youths. Tuition is provided in music theory (following the UNISA Theory Edition and enrolling the students for exams at UNISA twice a year), practical lessons with their teachers where each student is treated individually, and ensemble playing.
By providing instruments and lessons, also in music theory and ensemble playing, the students get a highly qualified education.
